Borussia Dortmund have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2013 after a thrilling 5-4 aggregate victory over Atletico Madrid.

Edin Terzic’s side had trailed 2-1 from the first leg in Madrid, but scored twice in quick succession on two occasions in a pulsating return leg in Dortmund to seal a 4-2 win and their progress.

Terzic said: “Extremely happy, extremely satisfied and very, very proud of the team and the club. The atmosphere in the stadium was extraordinarily good.

“There were again two moments that hurt us and could’ve tipped the balance, but we never lost our belief and stuck with what makes us strong. If you watch both matches, we deservedly reached the semi-finals. It’s a big deal for our club.”

Julian Brandt fired Dortmund into the lead in the 34th minute before Ian Maatsen, on loan at the German club from Chelsea, doubled their lead on the night and gave them an aggregate lead five minutes later.

Atletico Madrid levelled the tie four minutes after half-time as Dortmund defender Mats Hummels inadvertently sliced the ball into his own goal.

Diego Simeone’s side went ahead on aggregate 15 minutes later when Angel Correa gave them the lead, but Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug headed in seven minutes later to make it 3-2 to the hosts.

Three minutes later, Marcel Sabitzer, provider of Dortmund’s second and third goals, pounced on a loose ball inside Atletico’s penalty area and found the net with a fierce finish.

Dortmund will face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals after their 6-4 aggregate victory over Barcelona in the evening’s other tie.
