Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he opted against handing Endrick a penalty in Real Madrid's controversial victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday after the Brazilian did not respond well to being offered a spot-kick.

After Atletico took the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie to extra time, Endrick was substituted into the game with five minutes remaining before penalties - taking the place of Vinicius Junior in a clear sign the 18-year-old was being lined up as one of Madrid's five takers.

However, Endrick did not step up from 12 yards. Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde and Lucas Vazquez took Madrid's first four, before the deciding penalty was handed to centre-back Antonio Rudiger.

"We weren't sure [about the fifth taker]," Ancelotti told his press conference. "We wanted Endrick. When I told Endrick he was taking the shot, I didn't see him so happy. So we chose Rudiger, he's more cold."

Endrick has struggled to force his way into Ancelotti's thinking this season. The teenage striker has managed 28 appearances across all competitions, but he has totalled just 495 minutes at an average of 17.7 minutes per outing.

Mbappe is the clear starter at Madrid and Endrick's battle for minutes has sparked some significant speculation about a possible move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, although the young forward has insisted he is happy to bide his time and learn from his superstar teammates.
