Fiorentina are set to trigger the one-year extension option in the contract of goalkeeper David De Gea in the wake of reports of a possible return to Manchester United, a report has claimed.

United released De Gea on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 in favour of splashing out on Andre Onana, who joined from Inter in a deal worth up to £47m to reunite with his former Ajax boss, Erik ten Hag.

After taking a year out of football, De Gea signed on with Fiorentina last summer in search of a low-profile career resurgence, and he has enjoyed exactly that. He has ten clean sheets from 28 Serie A games, helping his team maintain one of the division's best defences.

De Gea's current contract is due to expire at the end of the season but Fiorentina hold the option to extend it by a further 12 months, doubling the 34-year-old's salary in the process. According to MARCA, they have made it clear they will be doing so imminently.

Fiorentina have been stunned by De Gea's impact, both on and off the pitch, and have no desire to lose the former United stopper this summer.

"The intention is to keep players like De Gea and [Nicolo] Fagioli but I don't want to say more," president Rocco Commisso admitted recently. "We'll see if they also want to stay, so we can start next year with an even stronger team."

Onana, for his part, is expected to fight for his United future this summer and will combat any efforts made to sell him.
