Real Madrid are reaching the end of the latest chapter in the club's storied history and a number of players are thought to be vulnerable as a squad rebuild begins this summer, including veteran midfielder Luka Modric.

Carlo Ancelotti is set to depart for the second time, having fallen foul of Madrid's sky-high standards this season after falling short in the Champions League and seeing Barcelona edge towards La Liga glory. He is expected to take charge of Brazil's national team, with Xabi Alonso heavily linked with the upcoming Bernabeu vacancy and Bayer Leverkusen confirming they won't stand in his way.

AS writes that "futures are at stake" for Luka Modric, David Alaba, Lucas Vazquez and Fran Garcia.

But there appears to be no guarantee that he will remain at the Bernabeu into a 14th season. Earlier this year, Ancelotti "instructed" the club to sort a new contract for Modric, but with the coach himself soon leaving his influence may not carry as much weight.

Vazquez is another long-serving veteran whose contract is nearing its end. The winger-turned-right-back is likely to be surplus to requirements next season following the expected arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal's return from an ACL injury.

Alaba and Garcia are under contract beyond this season but are still earmarked as potential departures. The former earns a big salary, thought to be €12m after tax – more than Alexander-Arnold is expected to be paid net – but hasn't justified it since his own ACL injury in 2023.

Garcia was brought back to Madrid when a buy-back clause was triggered to re-sign him from Rayo Vallecano in 2023. But, as evidenced by his omission from the Champions League quarter-finals against Arsenal, the 25-year-old isn't trusted for the biggest games.
