Manchester United could lose out on £20m from permanently selling Marcus Rashford as they may need to negotiate a pay-off to compensate for a drop in wages, it has been claimed.

Rashford's high salary effectively ended United's hopes of a January sale and the Englishman ended up joining Aston Villa on a loan deal which includes the option for a future transfer worth £40m.

Whether Villa choose to trigger that option remains to be seen. United are expected to stick to that asking price in conversations with other suitors, but the primary issue remains Rashford's wage demands.

Rashford's United contract, understood to be worth around £315,000 per week, still has three years left to run, and a reluctance to give up guaranteed money could see talks of a summer exit grind to a halt.

To avoid such a scenario, United may have to negotiate a pay-off for Rashford which could be worth as much as £20m.

Should United manage to sell Rashford for £40m, they stand to lose half of that figure in negotiations with the forward to bring his Old Trafford tenure to a permanent end.

Selling academy graduates like Rashford is seen as a route to 'pure profit' when it comes to meeting the Premier League's profit and sustainability regulations, and any funds raised would go a long way to helping the cash-strapped side after they committed to building a new £2bn stadium.
