Gianluigi Donnarumma could very well finish 2025 by being named the best goalkeeper in the world, but his long-term club future is not necessarily certain.

Donnarumma, who made a senior breakthrough at AC Milan when he was just 16, has been a star of Paris Saint-Germain's run deep into the Champions League, with heroic saves proving just as important as the attacking talents of Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and others.

But the Italian will shortly enter the last two years of his PSG contract and it presents a possible opportunity to other European giants looking to lock down the goalkeeper position.

Both clubs have been served by two of the very best goalkeepers of this generation.

Thibaut Courtois joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018 and has won the Champions League twice, as well as three La Liga titles and seven other trophies. The Belgian was also the 2022 recipient of the Yashin Trophy, the goalkeeper award under the Ballon d'Or umbrella.

But Courtois will turn 33 in a matter of days and no longer has the best fitness record. Having missed most of last season with knee trouble, niggling muscle problems have ruled the former Chelsea stopper out of eight games across La Liga and the Champions League in 2024/25.

If there is a possibility of replacing and upgrading an ageing star, it would be remiss of Madrid to let that pass them by without at least considering things.

Bayern are arguably even more in need of a goalkeeper succession plan. Manuel Neuer denied in the early weeks of the season that 2024/25 would be his last, but the former Germany international will turn 40 in 2026 and has again sat out a significant number of games with various injuries.

The Munich giants have ultimately had no issue dominating domestically again, securing the Bundesliga title early, but Neuer being absent for both legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Inter last month was certainly an issue. Still relying on Neuer, who has helped redefine modern goalkeeping and has served the club incredibly since 2011, may be holding them back.
